چکیده

A perfect modeling framework for the systematic study of the effect of filter shape on the resolved scales of motion in large eddy simulation is developed. The effects of the explicit and implicit filtering approaches in large eddy simulation are considered. A simple model for smooth filtering is proposed and the related effects are analyzed. The proposed approach provides an effective research tool for assessing the behavior of sub-grid scale models in a dynamic fashion. The performances of various classical models are examined by using the perfect modeling formalism for simulating the large and/or the small residual scales effect. Numerical experiments are performed for decaying isotropic turbulence. The consistency of the sub-grid scale models with the effective composite filter employed in real simulations is discussed. The necessity of using mixed models when solving doubly-filtered Navier–Stokes equations is verified. It is found that time evolution of large scale velocity field is more sensitive to sub-grid large scale models like Bardina model, while the grid-filtered sub-filter scale model is necessary to ensure the proper energy dissipation.

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

Comparison of Four Eddy-viscosity Sgs Models in Large-eddy Simulation of Flows over Rough Walls

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has become an increasingly attractive option for turbulence modeling due to the rise in computing power and the improvement in sub-grid scale (SGS) parameterizations. This study tests the improvements in simulations of wall-bounded flows over heterogeneous surfaces attained by the implementation of three improvements in the eddy-viscosity SGS closure: the dynamic mod...

مقایسه مدل‌های زیرشبکه اغتشاشی برای مدل‌سازی آتش استخری بزرگ مقیاس به روش شبیه‌سازی گردابه‌های بزرگ

The Smagorinsky and One-Equation sub-grid scales (SGS) for modeling of large scale pool fire using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been used and compared. The fire heat release rate was 2.07 MWatt and the fuel was Methane. Based on the mixture fraction approach and infinity fast chemistry assumption, the mean velocity profile and turbulence kinetic energy are calculated and compared against exp...

Optimal estimator and artificial neural network as efficient tools for the subgrid-scale scalar flux modeling

This work is devoted to exploring a new procedure to develop subgrid-scale (SGS) models in the context of large-eddy simulation (LES) of a passive scalar. Starting from the Noll’s formula (Noll 1967), the concept of an optimal estimator is first used to determine an accurate set of parameters to derive a SGS model. The SGS model is then defined as a surrogate model built from this set of parame...

A velocity-estimation subgrid model constrained by subgrid scale dissipation

Purely dissipative eddy–viscosity subgrid models have proven very successful in large–eddy simulations (LES) at moderate resolution. Simulations at coarse resolutions where the underlying assumption of small–scale universality is not valid, warrant more advanced models. However, non-eddy viscosity models are often unstable due to the lack of sufficient dissipation. This paper proposes a simple ...
